As we near the end of season one, we will be spending the next few episodes unpacking what we mean by the ecosystem of art and design. The ecosystem is the interconnected web of organizations, events and people who make up what we think of when we talk about art and design in our communities. While it is easy to focus on the individual parts, the reality of art and design is that is highly contingent on the way in which all of its supporting parts interact.
During our second part, we sit down with BJ Kocen, half of the fantastic duo behind Richmond, Virginia’s Glave Kocen Gallery. Together with Jennifer Glave, BJ has taken the reins of Current Art Fair as the new owners and directors. As we approach the art fair, BJ shares some information about the October 24-27 event as well as stories about and sneak peeks into what it has taken to organize the event and what the public can expect from its new location.
Current Art Fair was born in the fall of 2015 when several local gallery owners and directors from 1708 Gallery, ADA gallery, Candela Books + Gallery, Glave Kocen Gallery, Page Bond Gallery, Quirk Gallery, and Reynolds Gallery joined together to establish Richmond’s first contemporary art fair. Coined CURRENT (a nod to the nearby James River, the idea of the new, and the notion of an electric spark), the fair is held yearly in the fall.
