This week Ryan, Garreth, and Sam Taylor sit down to talk with Richmond-area painter Rachel Jeffers. In Jeffers’ paintings, domestic objects take on the role of characters, forming a new tableau from one painting to the next. Each painting presents her with new visual problems to solve. A precarious, subconscious logic guides her way to solutions. Temperature, seasons, and time of day become central themes as the painted atmosphere emerges. In this invented world, interior and exterior spaces can be conflated. A rising sun turns out to be a fried egg; a stove burner in the form of a crescent moon is nestled amongst a constellation of drips. Forks and spoons jut from the earth like weeds. A brush stroke contains its own story while pointing to something else. Multiple realities coexist.
Rachel Jeffers was born in New Orleans, LA and grew up in a rural town outside of Nashville, TN. She holds an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art’s Mount Royal School of Art and a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, OH. She is currently enrolled in Turps Correspondence Course. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings and has been exhibited throughout the Eastern US. Her paintings have recently been included in group exhibitions at Stay Home Gallery in Paris, TN, Irving Contemporary in Oxford, UK, and My Pet Ram in New York, NY. She lives in the Richmond, VA area with her husband and two children.
